Following its success over St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the “Sober Ride Home” program will return in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties for Memorial Day weekend, Fri., May 23 through Sun., May 25 from 7 PM to 3 AM.

The service, an effort of Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (TCRPC) in partnership with Uber and Commute PA, will offer free, $20 Uber vouchers to people who have consumed alcohol at bars and restaurants in the region.
Users can visit the Sober Ride Home website at www.soberridehome.org to scan a QR code and access a one-time, non-renewable Uber voucher for $20 (tip not included).
Forty percent of fatal crashes and 30 percent of serious injury crashes in the region involve impaired drivers, TCRPC Executive Director Andrew Bomberger said. The hours of operation were chosen because the majority of DUI crashes happen during those peak periods, he said.
“The goal of Sober Ride Home is to improve safety on our local roads and reduce the number of DUI crashes through safe and accessible transportation alternatives,” Bomberger said. “We’re also conducting an advertising campaign and collaborating with local bars and restaurants to encourage folks not to drive under the influence over Memorial Day weekend.”
Sober Ride Home will remain operational through the holiday weekend while supplies last. Restrictions apply. Users must have an active Uber account with a credit card on file to access a voucher. Visit www.soberridehome.org for complete information and program details.
The effort is made possible through a grant from the Federal Highway Administration and the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.
TCRPC provides land use and transportation planning for the Harrisburg-Carlisle metropolitan area’s 103 municipalities and nearly 600,000 residents.
