HARRISBURG, PA -- Following an increase in participation over July 4th weekend, Sober Ride Home will again offer free Uber Vouchers this Labor Day weekend in an effort to prevent DUI accidents, injuries and fatalities.

The program is offering $20 vouchers from 7 PM to 3:30 AM this Friday through Sunday, August 29-31 (ending Monday morning) in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties.

Participants who have consumed alcohol at bars and restaurants can visit the Sober Ride Home website at www.soberridehome.org to scan a QR code and access a one-time, non-renewable Uber voucher for $20 (tip not included).

“The goal is to prevent tragedies for people who may be out celebrating over the holiday weekend,” said Andrew Bomberger, executive director of the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (TCRPC), which partners on Sober Ride Home with Uber and Commute PA.

Bomberger said 40 percent of the region’s fatal crashes involve impaired drivers, as do 30 percent of serious injury crashes. The hours of operation were chosen because the majority of DUI crashes happen during those peak periods, he said. Local bars and restaurants will also be promoting the effort.

Sober Ride Home will remain operational through the holiday weekend while supplies last. Restrictions apply. Users must have an active Uber account with a credit card on file to access a voucher. Visit www.soberridehome.org for complete information and program details.

The effort is made possible through a grant from the Federal Highway Administration and the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.

TCRPC provides land use and transportation planning for the Harrisburg-Carlisle metropolitan area’s 103 municipalities and nearly 600,000 residents.
