Southeastern PA Transit Providers:

Port Authority of Allegheny County provides a network of public transportation services to persons traveling within a 775 square-mile area, including the City of Pittsburgh and all of Allegheny County. Port Authority has a fleet of 1,000 buses, 83 light rail vehicles (LRVs) and 75 mini-buses. With the Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines and sponsorship of ACCESS, the nation’s largest paratransit program of its kind for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, Port Authority is one of the nation’s largest and most diversified public transit agencies.

PAAC Services:

  • Light Rail Transit System: In 1984, Port Authority began operating a 25-mile light rail system, called the T, which provides service to Downtown Pittsburgh and several communities south of the city. Four light rail transit lines to the South Hills -- Allentown, South Hills Village, Overbrook and Library -- currently provide thousands of people with convenient and efficient transit service to Downtown Pittsburgh and other destinations in southern Allegheny County each day.

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. East Busway: The Martin Luther King, Jr. East Busway (East Busway) has been providing bus rapid transit service to Downtown Pittsburgh, the eastern communities of Pittsburgh and the eastern suburbs of Allegheny County since February 1983. In addition to its 34 routes providing express and local bus service, nine busway stations are within walking distance of homes and businesses in some of Allegheny County's most heavily populated communities.

  • South Busway: As the oldest operating busway facility in the United States, the South Busway opened in 1977 and continues to provide frequent bus rapid transit service between Downtown Pittsburgh, Station Square and many neighborhoods south of the City of Pittsburgh. The South Busway bypasses traffic congestion on the Liberty Bridge and Tunnel by way of a joint-use bus/light rail transit tunnel (Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel) and provides a viable transit option that avoids the daily traffic bottleneck on Route 51.

  • West Busway: The West Busway is a very popular transit option for thousands of people who live, work and travel between western Allegheny County neighborhoods, Downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland. The busway’s immediate success is due, in large part, to the significant bus rapid transit benefits this facility provides and the many park and ride lots located at busway stations and in suburban areas serviced by buses that use the busway. The West Busway also serves as a reliable rapid transit alternative to bypassing traffic congestion on the Parkway West (I-279).

  • ACCESS: ACCESS is door-to-door, advance reservation, shared ride transportation provided throughout Port Authority's service area and serves primarily senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
