Departing Train at Elizabethtown Station

Amtrak currently provides train service in the region, with two stations in Dauphin County and three in Lancaster County. Plans continue to provide enhanced service to these stations via the propose CORRIDORone regional rail system. The Harrisburg Transportation Center is the second busiest Amtrak station in Pennsylvania. The other main station in this region is the Lancaster Transportation Center. Other stations in this area include the Middletown station, Elizabethtown station, and the Mt. Joy station. Plans are proceeding to build a new train station at the Harrisburg International Airport (HIA).

Regional Amtrak Stations:

Middletown Train Station

Middletown Train Station

Middletown Station is an Amtrak rail station located about 10 miles east of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at Union Street and Mill Street, Middletown, Pennsylvania. The station is located in the south end of Middletown, very close to the borough's primary north/south commercial street (Union Street). It is served by most Amtrak Keystone Service trains.

The station is simply a bus shelter next to the railroad. There is no ticket office at this station. In Federal Fiscal Year 2006, there were 33,346 Amtrak boardings plus alightings at Middletown station, up 14.8% from 2005. Some Amtrak riders in the Harrisburg area, especially on weekdays, use Middletown station instead of the Harrisburg Transportation Center to avoid expensive downtown Harrisburg parking charges. Parking is free at Middletown station.

Capital Area Transit (CAT), based in Harrisburg, operates its Route 7 bus through Middletown less than one block (.1 mile) from the station.  There are plans to relocate the train station from its current location to a location adjacent to Harrisburg International Airport (HIA) along PA Route 230, roughly 1.5 miles west of Middletown. This relocation will occur after a new Amtrak/CAT CORRIDORone railroad station is built next to the airport. The HIA Railroad Station will be close enough to the airport that only moveable and conventional walkways will be needed for access between the airport and the railroad station. Parking for rail users will be provided in a parking lot across PA 230, near an existing shopping plaza.

Elizabethtown Train Station

Elizabethtown Station

Elizabethtown Station is an Amtrak rail station located about halfway between Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Wilson Ave. near W. High St. in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. The station is located on the south edge of the developed part of the borough, approximately .75 miles from the center of the borough. It is served by most Amtrak Keystone Service trains and westbound Pennsylvanian trains.

An old railroad station building exists at the stop, but it is not currently used. There is also no ticket office at this station. Plans have been developed to refurbish the train station and focus new developments around the station using Transit Oriented Design (TOD) practices in the future.  In Federal Fiscal Year 2006, there were 62,526 Amtrak boardings plus alightings at this station, up 21.5% from 2005. Elizabethtown is the 6th busiest Amtrak station in Pennsylvania and the 5th busiest in the state serviced by the Keystone Service.

Mt. Joy Train Station

Mt. Joy Station Parking Area Mt. Joy Station Loading Area

Mount Joy Station is an Amtrak rail station located about 13 miles northwest of Lancaster, Pennsylvania at East Henry Street and North Market Street in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. It is served by most Amtrak Keystone Service trains.

The station is simply a bus shelter in a railroad cut. There is no ticket office at this station. In Federal Fiscal Year 2006, there were 38,448 Amtrak boardings plus alightings at Mount Joy station, up 40.0% from 2005.

Red Rose Transit Authority, based in Lancaster, operates its Route 18 bus through Mount Joy one block (.1 mile) from the station.

Lancaster Transportation Center

Lancaster Transportation Center Lancaster Station Terminal

The Lancaster Transportation Center is an Amtrak rail station and intercity bus facility located at 53 McGovern Avenue, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The station is located at the north end of the city, roughly a mile from downtown Lancaster.  If implemented, the Lancaster station would be the eastern hub of the CORRIDORone Regional Rail system.  There have also been talks with SEPTA to implement a connecting rail line from the Philadelphia area to Lancaster to provide direct connections from CORRIDORone to SEPTA.

The Lancaster Train Station is served by all Amtrak Keystone Service and Pennsylvanian trains. Primary cities served on Amtrak to and from Lancaster include Philadelphia and New York to the east and Harrisburg, Altoona (Pennsylvanian only), and Pittsburgh (Pennsylvanian only) to the west. Both staffed and Quik-Trak machine ticket service are available for all departures and red cap service is also available. In Federal Fiscal Year 2006, there were 368,076 Amtrak boardings plus alightings at the Lancaster Train Station, up 10.3% from 2005. It is the 3rd busiest Amtrak station in Pennsylvania and 28th busiest in the United States, ranking just behind the Harrisburg Transportation Center in both categories.

There is also an intercity bus provider, Capitol Trailways, that provides service to the station. Capitol Trailways connects Lancaster to York and Harrisburg to the west and to Ephrata, PA, King of Prussia, PA, Willow Grove, PA, and New York, NY to the east, as well as many cities and towns beyond those listed via transfers.

Finally, the local public transit operator in the Lancaster area, Red Rose Transit Authority, has one metro area bus (Route 3) that stops at the station and a few county-wide buses operating north of Lancaster city that stop close to the station.
